This
course will involve a brief illustrated talk on the Friday evening on the history
and significance of this fascinating region. Then there will be the opportunity
to visit the Museum sites themselves in the company of an expert guide. Saturday
morning will be spent in and around Coalbrookdale, looking at Darby's original
blast furnace, the houses where the Quaker ironmasters lived and the Museum
of Ion, where many of the Coalbrookdale Company's products are on display. Lunchtime
will be spent in Ironbridge, with an opportunity to visit and photograph the
world-famous bridge, sample the local shops and find refreshments in one of
the many pubs or cafes overlooking the River Severn.
The afternoon will be spent at Blists Hill where, in addition to a number of
original industrial monuments, there is a recreated Victorian town complete
with costumed demonstrators. On Sunday morning, the emphasis will be on the
clay industries, with a visit to the Jackfield Tile Works, where decorative
floor and wall tiles were made, and then on to the Coalport China Factory, which
once had many prestigious customers including the Tsar of Russia. For those
wanting it, a brief underground experience should also be possible, time permitting,
with a visit to the celebrated Tar Tunnel, before the course concludes.
Your
tutor for this course will be John Powell, who has been on the staff of the
Ironbridge Gorge Museum for almost 20 years, and is also a longstanding member
of the Council of the Association for Industrial Archaeology and an active member
of various other relevant preservation bodies.
