BEYOND IRONBRIDGE - INDUSTRIAL ARCHAEOLOGY OF THE SEVERN VALLEY AND SHROPSHIRE.

The Ironbridge Gorge is a world heritage site - the birthplace of the industrial revolution - but how did industry affect the surrounding lanscape? This course introduces industrial archaeology with two tours of sites around the Severn valley and Shropshire.
Industrial landscapes to be seen are as varied as canals, quarries, tramways and lead mines, some of which may date back to Roman times.
This weekend course is an introduction to industrial archaeology (past and future developments) with a Friday evening lecture and two day field visits by coach. Some sites visited include rough walking.
Sites to be visited during the two day period are, Ironbridge gorge sites around Broseley and Ironbridge but outside the museum area. Canals-Longdon upon Tern iron aqueduct. Wenlock Edge limestone quarries and kilns. Shropshire lead mining sites.Charlcote furnace, Clee Hill quarries and railway incline. Catherton Common-early coal mine bell pits.Stourport canal basin and Kidderminster as an example of urban industrial lanscape.
