THE SEVERN VALLEY RAILWAY
Course No. 023

The Railway passes through some of the finest rural scenery in England. This course includes an introductory evening lecture, with slides, followed by an all-day guided trip from Bridgnorth station. We shall be afforded behind the scenes glimpses of how this preserved steam line is run. All passenger services are normally steam hauled from the extensive and varied locamotive collection. Exceptions are at diesel galas, and in exceptionally long spells of rain free weather.
The course of the railway passes through water meadows and remnants of the Wyre Forest,an ancient hunting ground, and your guide will point out salient features, including a water-powered flour mill. Later you will see period stations much used for television filming (Oh Doctor Beeching, Goodnight Mr. Tom, etc), Victoria Bridge where the line crosses the river, lineside reservoirs used for sailing and fishing etc.
On arrival at Bewdley, a leisurely ten minute walk takes us down over the river into the town. Here we take lunch at a local hostelry, followed by a visit to " The Shambles", a small museum of rural crafts and life in the Wyre Forest as it used to be. There is also a small brass foundry.

Returning to the station we journey on, passing the West Midlands Safari park, then through the quarter mile tunnel to Kidderminster. Here the S.V.R. has built it's own station, which is a replica of the G.W.R.'s Ross-on-Wye, a station alas long since gone and also a new signal box. This latter, built in 1987 and commisioned the following year was the first completely new G.W.R. box for 40 years.
