Leaf Workshop - An in-depth study using pencil and watercolour.
Whilst a flower would seem to steal the scene in a botanical illustration,
very
often it is the strong supporting act of its leaves that enable it to do so.
Leaves have a fascinating world of their own, and need to be portrayed with
as much painstaking attention to detail as would be applied to any other component
of an illustration. The two day course will provide a wonderful voyage of
discovery for the student who will examine closely every aspect of a single
leaf. Students will be shown how to observe form, structure, texture and colour
of the specimens and Sue Barker will demonstrate the application of her pencil
and watercolour techniques.
The course structure will be on the following lines:
First day - Observing a leaf's form, structure, texture and colour:
Making a detailed outline drawing
Applying tone using pencil
Transferring the leaf drawing to watercolour paper.
Experiments with colour mixing and matching.
Second day:
The whole day will be devoted to applying and developing the watercolour technique,
and ending with a critique and evaluation of work produced.
