BOTANICAL ILLUSTRATION
Course No.012. Tutor - Sue Barker
Botanical illustration is a particular form of flower painting. It has a long
history possibly dating back more that 3000 years. In early medicine careful
plant studies were widely used as pictorial reference and later reproduced
as woodcut illustrations. With the increase in botanical research many fine
artists emerged such as Pierre-Joseph Redoute and the brothers Franz and Ferdinand
Bauer.
Sue Barker is very accomplished as a free-lance scientific illustrator, her
portfolio including both commissioned and self-initiated work. She graduated
from Middlesex University with a 1st Class BA (Hons)degree in Visual Communication
and Design with a scientific illustration specialism. Sue has recently been
appointed as Artist in Residence to the Botanic Garden and the high degree
of commitment, technical skill and sheer enthusiasm she brings to her subject
is clearly conveyed in the finesse of her drawing. She also has experience
of teaching in a range of contexts and her students highly recommend her abilities
as a sympathetic, Imaginative and effective teacher.
