Botanical illustration is a particular form of flower painting. It has a long history possibly dating back more that 3000 years. In early medicine careful plant studies were widely used as pictorial reference and later reproduced as woodcut illustrations. With the increase in botanical research many fine artists emerged such as Pierre-Joseph Redoute and the brothers Franz and Ferdinand Bauer.
