CALLIGRAPHY AND ILLUMINATED MANUSCRIPTS

Tutors for this two day workshop - Calligrapher, Linda Hayter, and Dr. Stella Panayotova, Jesus College Oxford.
Calligraphy - Students will learn the basic principles of writing with the broad-edged pen using a medieval script. There will be the opportunity to explore and use traditional writing and illuminating materials, including gold leaf. Using modern papers and materials students will experience the work of the medieval scribe and illuminator and the ultimate thrill of using black ink, gold and pigments to produce their own manuscript. There will be demonstrations of all techniques and prepared quills, exemplars and samples of vellum will be available to take away to use at home.

Illuminated Manuscripts

Lecture illustrated and supplemented by notes.
Combined with a practical introduction for beginners,
intermediate, or advanced. All three sessions will be
supported by slides and handouts containing a
summary and medieval textual sources in translation.

Session One - 1. The Body of the Book

c. Pricking, ruling and binding

Session Two - The Art of Writing

a. Inks and writing tools.
b. Scripts and hands - a historical development.
c. Calligraphy - ancillary skill or profession

Session Three - Manuscript Illumination

a. Materials and techniques.
b. Types of illustration.
c. Use of and attitudes towards images - books for the religious and Books for the laity
d. Patronage and workshops - artists in the cloister, at the Court and at the University..
